The Niger State Government has announced the reopening of both public and private schools across the state, effective Monday, 12th January 2026.


This decision was approved by His Excellency, the Executive Governor of Niger State, Farmer Mohammed Umaru Bago, following careful security assessments and extensive consultations with relevant security agencies. The move underscores the state's commitment to safeguarding lives while ensuring uninterrupted access to quality education.


According to a statement from the Office of the Honourable Commissioner, Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, the reopening comes with specific conditions:

1. Safe Area Schools to Reopen: All public and private schools, including boarding schools, located in areas deemed safe and secure are approved to resume on the stipulated date.

2. Unsafe Area Schools Remain Closed: All day and boarding schools situated in areas currently considered unsafe or insecure will remain closed. These schools can only reopen after being duly assessed and cleared by the relevant security authorities.

3. Mandatory Student Registration: All school authorities are directed to register every returning student immediately upon resumption.

4. Data Submission: The compiled student data must be submitted to the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education within one week of resumption for proper documentation and monitoring.

5. Local Government Support: All Local Government Area Chairmen have been directed to support the reopening process within their jurisdictions by ensuring compliance and providing necessary assistance.
