ABSU SUG promises to address rent hike & irregular demand for renewal

The Students' Union Government (SUG) of Abia State University (ABSU), Uturu, has officially issued a statement addressing the recent concerns raised by students regarding the sudden spike in lodge rents and the improper timing of lodge rent renewals across various host communities.

The SUG, through a memorandum signed by the Secretary General, Comr. Ihekaibeyanma Promise Ego, and the S.U.G President, Comr. Ugoani Emmanuel Ugonna, has acknowledged the student anxiety and concerns over "unconventional and untimely methods of demanding renewals and increasing rents" by some landlords.

The SUG is currently engaging with the relevant authorities, community leaders, and lodge owners to ensure the following:

Indiscriminate rent increases are addressed and brought under control.

Orthodox and student-friendly procedures for lodge rent renewal are restored.

A more predictable and fair system is put in place to prevent this disruption from recurring.

The SUG has urged all students to remain calm as negotiations progress. They reiterated their commitment, stating:

"We remain calm as we continue to engage constructively. Your welfare remains our top priority, and we are committed to ensuring that these issues are resolved in the best interest of every ABSU student."

Further updates will be communicated to the student body as negotiations and interventions progress.
