EPL: Carragher blames Neville over midfielder’s departure from Man Utd

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has blamed Manchester United legend Gary Neville for midfielder Scott McTominay’s departure from Old Trafford.

Carragher believes Neville “killed” the Scotland international with excessive criticism before he moved to Napoli in August 2024.

McTominay, who came through Manchester United’s academy, was sold to the Serie A champions for £25.7m last year.

The midfielder went on to help Antonio Conte’s side clinch the Serie A title and also won the league’s Most Valuable Player award.

McTominay was further nominated for the 2025 Ballon d’Or, which was won by Ousmane Dembele.

Speaking in a new video posted on The Overlap YouTube channel, Neville asked: “What has happened to Scott McTominay? Have we made a massive mistake?”

Carragher responded: “You have killed another Man United player, that is what happened. Too much criticism, [saying] he’s not good enough.”

Neville, however, insisted: “I didn’t say he was not good enough. Not me. I never thought they should have got rid of him.”
