UNIABUJA Governing Council appoints Sambo as Acting Registrar

The 11th Governing Council of the University of Abuja led by Distinguished Senator Dr Olanrewaju Tejuoso, has approved the appointment of Malam Sambo Mohammed as Acting Registrar of the institution. 


The appointment was made during the 80th Extraordinary Meeting of Council held on Friday 7 November 2025. It takes effect from Tuesday 11 November 2025, and will last for three months.


Sambo succeeds Mrs Roseline Adakayi, who had earlier been appointed in May 2025 for a period of six months.

Until his appointment, Sambo has served in various strategic positions in the University, including most recently as deputy registrar, Council Division. 

In line with the University’s governance structure, the newly appointed acting registrar shall be responsible to the vice-chancellor and shall serve as secretary to the University Governing Council.

Congratulating Sambo, the Acting Vice-Chancellor, Professor Mathew Adamu, described the appointment as a welcome development that would help consolidate administrative efficiency.

Adamu charged him to uphold professionalism, integrity, and teamwork “as we continue to work together to lift the University higher." 

The acting vice-chancellor also commended Mrs Roseline Adakayi for her “good work” during her service as acting registrar, noting that her contributions helped to stabilise the system. 

PROFILE 

Malam Mohammed Sambo holds a B A (Hons) in Public Administration from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria (1985–1988) and a Master of Public Administration (2010–2016) from the University of Abuja.

After completing his National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) at Delta Steel Company Limited, Aladja, Warri, Delta State, in 1989, he joined the Peoples Bank of Nigeria, Ikara Branch, Kaduna State, where he served as programme officer from 1989 to 1993.

From 1994 to 1998, he worked at Nigeria Universal Bank Limited, Zaria Branch, Kaduna State, as the officer in charge of the Entries Department.

He later joined the Maritime Academy of Nigeria, Oron, where he served from 1998 to 2007 and rose to the rank of principal assistant registrar before transferring his service to the University of Abuja in April 2007.

Sambo previously served on secondment as deputy director, Administration at the Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria from 2012 to 2014.

He was again seconded to the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMET)/National Weather Forecast and Climate Research Centre, where he served as General Manager, Human Resources Management, from September 2017 to February 2022.

Since joining the University, the experienced administrator has held various positions of responsibility, including secretary to several strategic committees.

The new acting registrar is a member of the Association of Nigerian University Professional Administrators (ANUPA) and Nigerian Institute of Management (NIM). He is also an associate of the Chartered Institute of Personnel Management of Nigeria (CIPM).

He has attended several workshops and conferences within Nigeria and abroad, covering areas such as management, leadership, human resource development, digital literacy, and administration.

Sambo brings to this position more than three decades of administrative experience.
