Princess Caroline Louise Marguerite Grimaldi of Monaco is the eldest daughter of Prince Rainier III and American actress Grace Kelly.
She first attracted international attention as heir presumptive to the Monegasque throne before her brother’s birth, and later won admiration for her poise and dedication to cultural and charitable causes.
Early Life and education
Caroline is now at the age of 68 and was born on 23 January 1957 in the Prince’s Palace of Monaco.
She spent parts of her childhood in the United States at her maternal grandparents’ home in Philadelphia, and summers at Camp Oneka in the Poconos under Secret Service protection.
In Monaco she joined the Guides of Monaco, the principality’s scouting movement, and completed her French baccalauréat with honours in 1974 at St Mary’s School Ascot.
After a semester at Sciences Po, she earned a diploma in philosophy with minors in psychology and biology from the Sorbonne University in Paris, graduating in 1975.
She is fluent in French, English, Spanish, German and Italian.
Personal Life
At age 21 she married French banker Philippe Junot in 1978; they divorced two years later.
In December 1983 she wed Italian businessman Stefano Casiraghi, with whom she had three children before his fatal accident in October 1990.
In January 1999 she married Ernst August, Prince of Hanover, and they welcomed Princess Alexandra in July that year; their marriage ended in divorce in 2009.
Since then Caroline has remained single and devotes her time to her four children and charitable work.
Career
Although never in active government, Caroline has served as regent for Monaco on several occasions.
In 1981 she founded Jeune J’Ecoute, a counselling service for young people, and in 1985 established the Compagnie des Ballets de Monte-Carlo, later becoming president of the Monte-Carlo Opera.
In 2003 she was appointed UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador in recognition of her advocacy for children and family education.
She also chairs AMADE International, the World Association of Children’s Friends founded by her mother, and represents Monaco at cultural and diplomatic events worldwide.
