Police arrest community leader over death of woman near varsity in Yobe

The Yobe State Police Command has arrested a prominent community and market leader, Abdulmumini Garba, in connection with the death of 45-year-old Falmata Abubakar, whose body was discovered near the Federal University Gashua last week.

Police Public Relations Officer, SP Dungus Abdulkarim, disclosed this in a statement issued on Wednesday. He said the arrest followed a detailed investigation by operatives from the Bade Division after the corpse was found on October 17, 2025.

Abdulkarim identified the suspect as a 60-year-old resident of Gasma in Karasuwa Local Government Area, who also serves as the Secretary of the Vegetables Market (Kasuwan Gwari) in Gashua.

“During interrogation, the suspect confessed to conveying the late Falmata Abubakar in his vehicle, during which an argument ensued over her request for financial assistance to support her business,” the statement read.

The police said the argument turned violent, leading to the woman’s death inside the vehicle. The suspect allegedly disposed of her body in a nearby bush around 10 p.m. on the same day.

SP Abdulkarim described the arrest as “a testament to the Command’s proactive intelligence-gathering capacity and tactical operational strategies,” which enabled the swift tracking and apprehension of the suspect.

Commissioner of Police, Emmanuel Ado, assured the public that the investigation would be concluded diligently and that the case would be charged to court upon completion.
