Made Kuti Schools Troll Who Attacked His Inter-Tribal Marriage

Afrobeat musician, Made Kuti, has reacted to an offensive tweet targeting his marriage to Inedoye, his wife, in which a social media user attacked their union based on ethnic grounds.

The troll had shared a picture of the singer, referring to him as “another foolish Yoruba man who married an osu Igbo woman” while condemning inter-tribal marriages.

In a lengthy response on Instagram, Made Kuti said the comment did not anger him but rather made him feel pity. He explained that many of Africa’s great leaders — including his grandfather Fela Kuti — believed in unity and fought against divisive structures like colonialism and tribalism.

“Every one of our great African leaders believed in the importance of African unity because they had faith in the potential of our people to rise intellectually above the structures that were used to colonize us,” he wrote. “They hoped that we would preserve our culture and traditions, which would support our honour and respect, creating a society that would grow up in a unified continent with collective progress.”

Addressing the troll directly, Made added: “You haven’t freed yourself from your nearly 500 years old chains. By clinging to tribalism and segregation, you are still mentally enslaved. The healthiest way to free your mind is to read. Enlighten yourself with history and knowledge left by leaders like Kwame Nkrumah, Fela Kuti, and Thomas Sankara.”
