“I’m Just Doing My Job”- Terry G Denies Political Affiliation After Backlash

Nigerian singer Gabriel Oche Amanyi, widely known as Terry G, has addressed public criticism over his participation in political events as a performer.

Speaking on a recent episode of The Real Shareholders podcast, Terry G clarified that accepting performance invitations at political gatherings does not indicate political allegiance.

He explained that it’s unfair for fans to draw conclusions based solely on his presence at such events, especially when he hasn’t openly supported any party or candidate.

“As an artist, we are usually billed to perform. In the current economy, if you’re opportuned to even get a gig from a political party, you’re lucky. So, respect to the party.

“But as a musician, I’m just doing my job [performing], I’m an independent artist. I’m so independent. I only went to political events to perform. At least, fans should have judged me based on what I said there, but they are now judging me based on what I did.

“No, you don’t need to judge me for that. I went to do my job. If I had said people should vote for APC, that’s a different thing. I went to do my job just like my other colleagues. I don’t know why mine is different,” he said.

Terry G had previously come under fire on social media after performing at President Bola Tinubu’s pre-inauguration concert, which took place at the MKO Abiola National Stadium in Abuja in May 2023.

Months later, in November, the singer accused the All Progressives Congress (APC) of owing him payment for his appearance at the event, alleging that the funds meant for him were hijacked by unknown individuals.
