Basketmouth Forced to Prostrate Before OAU Students in Viral Video
A viral video capturing comedian Bright Okpocha, popularly known as Basketmouth, has sparked laughter and cultural commentary online after the veteran entertainer found himself at odds with a local tradition during a performance at Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife.
During his appearance at a campus event, Basketmouth was unexpectedly asked by the excited student crowd to fully prostrate a symbolic act of reverence in Yoruba culture before taking the stage. Initially surprised and amused by the demand, the comedian attempted to meet the students halfway with a courteous bow.
However, the students were not having it. In a show of unity, they collectively chanted and refused to let the performance begin until Basketmouth lay flat in traditional Yoruba fashion.
In the viral clip shared on Instagram, Basketmouth can be seen joking, “Elder go prostrate for small children?” before eventually giving in with a smile. “When in Rome, behave like Romans,” he quipped, moments before hitting the ground and drawing an explosion of applause and laughter from the crowd.
The humorous cultural standoff has since triggered a wave of reactions on social media, with many praising Basketmouth for his humility and ability to embrace tradition, even in the face of playful pressure.
