Tems Makes History with 1 Billion Spotify Streams, Receives Prestigious Plaque
Nigerian singer and songwriter Temilade Openiyi, popularly known as Tems, has hit a major milestone in her music career. Her collaboration with American rapper Future and global superstar Drake on the track Wait For U has officially surpassed one billion streams on Spotify.
This remarkable achievement places Tems among a select group of African artists who have received Spotify’s prestigious Billion Streams plaque. She now joins the ranks of other global Afrobeats sensations such as Wizkid, Rema, and South African singer Tyla—each of whom has also reached the coveted one-billion-stream mark.
Wait For U was released in 2022 as part of Future’s album I Never Liked You and features Tems’ vocals sampled from her song Higher. The track quickly became a commercial success, debuting at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, making Tems the first African artist to debut at the top of the chart.
In 2023, the song earned Tems her first Grammy Award for Best Melodic Rap Performance, further solidifying her place on the global music stage. The success of Wait For U is yet another testament to Tems’ growing influence and artistry in the international music scene.
