Portable’s Management Issues Statement On Phone Theft Allegation, Netizens React
On Sunday, July 20, Nigerian singer Portable released an official statement on Instagram to address a long-standing accusation involving the theft of a mobile phone.
The statement, titled Official Statement on Behalf of Portable, sought to clarify the events that took place during his time with Destiny Records. According to the singer, the issue dates back to his affiliation with the label, which was run by Ija Omode, now the Vice Chairman of the Union of Road Transport Workers in Ogun State.
Portable explained that Destiny Records had initially given him a phone to support his work as an artist. However, he claimed that a lack of support and growth opportunities led him to leave the label. His departure was allegedly met with hostility members of the label reportedly seized the phone, hacked into it, and accused him of theft.
The situation escalated when Portable was publicly humiliated, including being stripped naked a moment that was captured on video and published by Naijakit, a media outlet.
Despite his rise in the music industry, Portable noted that the individuals behind the incident have not publicly corrected the damaging narrative. While some have reached out privately, no official retraction has been made. He characterized the incident as a targeted act of bullying and intimidation.
In the statement, Portable clarified that his goal isn’t revenge but to reclaim his dignity and warn young artists against similar mistreatment. He said his decision to speak out was guided by a desire for “truth, justice, and transparency.”
The release of this statement came shortly after social commentator Verydarkman shared a resurfaced video showing Portable being assaulted and accused of tricycle theft.
“OFFICIAL STATEMENT ON BEHALF OF PORTABLE
This is to clarify a past incident falsely accusing Portable of phone theft.
During his time with Destiny Records, Portable was provided a phone by the label’s owner, Ija Omode, who currently serves as Vice Chairman of the Union of Road Transport in Ogun State. Due to lack of support from the label, Portable made the decision to leave. However, this was met with hostility.
After his departure, individuals affiliated with the label forcibly retrieved the phone, bypassed its password, and went on to publicly humiliate Portable by stripping and falsely accusing him of theft. A video of this incident was later circulated online by Naijakit.
Since rising to success, those involved have reached out to Portable privately, but have failed to publicly correct the narrative.
This is a clear case of intimidation and bullying by a record label. Portable is speaking out now not for revenge, but to set the record straight and protect upcoming artists from similar treatment.
This statement is issued in pursuit of truth, justice, and transparency. #JusticeForPortable #TruthMatters #EndLabelBullying #PortableSpeaks.”
