Nigerian music star Sarah Oyinkansola Aderibigbe, popularly known as Ayra Starr, has shared her candid opinion on one of West Africa’s most beloved dishes jollof rice.

In a recent interview, the Rush crooner was asked which African nation she believes prepares the best version of the iconic meal. Dressed casually in a white crop top and black pants, Ayra Starr didn’t hesitate in her response.

While affirming her loyalty to Nigerian jollof, which she described as unmatched, the singer praised Senegalese jollof for its authentic taste. She admitted that after tasting it, she understood why many consider Senegal the birthplace of jollof rice.

Her comments add fuel to the ongoing culinary rivalry among African nations, particularly between Nigeria and Ghana, who have long debated who makes the superior version of the dish. Ayra Starr’s acknowledgment of Senegal as the origin may not end the debate, but it certainly adds an interesting twist.

In Ayra Starr’s words:

“I just tried Senegalese jollof rice, so right now, Nigerian jollof is always gonna be number one, but I get why people say they are the originators of jollof rice.”
