Lawyer Ayo Shonaiya Reacts to Speed Darlington’s Refusal to Honor NAPTIP Invitation

Nigerian lawyer and entertainment consultant, Ayo Shonaiya, has weighed in on the ongoing controversy involving singer Speed Darlington and the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP).

The agency had invited Speed Darlington for questioning after he claimed in an Instagram video that he slept with a 15-year-old virgin girl in a hotel and paid ₦2,000 to a staff member to clean up the blood. Following his refusal to honor multiple invitations, NAPTIP declared him wanted last Friday.

In a new video, Speed Darlington doubled down, stating that he would not be appearing before the agency. According to him, while his statement may have been reckless, “irresponsible speech is not a crime.” He insisted that NAPTIP lacks any real evidence against him and even mocked the situation by saying that if they want him to show up, they should pay him his ₦2.5 million appearance fee.

Reacting to the incident, Ayo Shonaiya acknowledged that while the issue should not be trivialized, the controversial singer may have a valid legal point.

“Legally speaking, this IDIOT actually has a point,” Shonaiya stated, suggesting that without tangible evidence, simply making a disturbing statement may not meet the threshold for prosecution.

The matter has stirred heated debate online, with many Nigerians split between seeing Speed Darlington’s comments as a joke in bad taste and others demanding he be held accountable regardless of intent.
