Club World Cup: Pros, cons as FIFA gathers Real Madrid, Chelsea, Al Ahly, others in US
For the first time, the Club World Cup will be played in the summer.
And for the first time, there will be 32 teams competing to win it.
Spearheaded by FIFA president, Gianni Infantino, the revamped Club World Cup is not exactly exciting clubs.
Players and fans are not very keen either.
The tickets have not been moving. And according to the UK Mirror, we could see as many as 45,000 empty seats for the opening game on Saturday between Lionel Messi’s Inter Miami and Al Ahly.
FIFA found itself initially unable to shift broadcasting rights before DAZN took them off the governing bodies’ hands for a remarkable $1billion (£787million) figure.
The $1bn investment in DAZN from Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund a few weeks later, could explain where the funding for the bid came from and what FIFA is hoping to achieve off the field of play with this competition.
But Victor Mbidi, an international Multimedia Broadcast Journalist who lives in Washington, US, is happy regardless.
“I feel really excited that the competition is holding in the United States,” Mbidi tells DAILY POST.
“This represents the growth of the MLS and will increase the global appeal of the league.
“David Beckham’s transfer to LA Galaxy, Thierry Henry to New York FC and most recently Lionel Messi to Inter Miami, are among factors that have given the league a higher standing in the footballing world since the United States hosted the World Cup in 1994.
“This competition will also be a prelude of what to expect next year during the World Cup to be co-hosted by the United States, Mexico and Canada.
“This notwithstanding issues of inclusion, TV rights and revenue dispute that saw one of the participating teams – Seattle Sounders – wearing T-shirts with ‘Club World Cash Grab’ written on it to signal their protest of the competition’s player payment structure needs to be looked into in future competitions.
“Also Europe’s 12 team contingent has been a source of worry for other continental participants.
“But overall, the timing of the format has been long overdue.”
This year’s Club World Cup will see top teams like Real Madrid, Chelsea, Bayern Munich, Manchester City, etc.
So, which of these clubs have the biggest fanbase in the US?
