Residents groan as car theft surges in FCT

Residents of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, are worried over the surge in car theft in Abuja and its environs.

Waploaded gathered that frequently, cars, especially the more expensive ones, are being stolen from where they were parked.

In the last few weeks, many cases have been reported in different parts of the FCT, raising fear in the minds of car owners.

Those at high risk are usually residents who park their cars on the streets to buy one or two things at shopping malls.

However, it has been discovered that even cars parked in supposedly secured places are still being stolen.

While some blamed the situation on the prevailing state of the economy and the high rate of unemployment, especially among the youths in Nigeria, others said those responsible for such crimes were sophisticated criminals.

Waploaded gathered that the FCT police command recently dismantled a seven-man gang which specialised in armed robbery and carjacking in Abuja.

The command confirmed that it received credible information that the syndicate was planning to rob an unsuspecting victim in the Maitama area of the FCT on May 19, 2025, and intercepted it.

“On sighting the officers, the gang members opened fire. In the ensuing gun duel, one of the suspects, Abdulmininu Bello aka Babanle, was neutralised, while seven others, aged between 18 and 51, were arrested at the scene.
