“I Work Five Times Harder Because I’m Blind”- Cobhams Asuquo Opens Up

In a heartfelt interview with Hip TV, artist Cobhams Asuquo opened up about the challenges he has faced living as a blind musician. He shared how unwavering determination and resilience have been key factors in his success despite his visual impairment.

Cobhams stressed the significance of embracing one’s reality, encouraging individuals with disabilities to accept themselves fully and draw power from their unique experiences.

He also called for clarity in language, explaining that he prefers to be described as blind rather than “visually impaired,” and that this identity is something he embraces proudly.

Reflecting on his journey, Cobhams expressed that his blindness has been a source of strength and motivation, rather than a limitation.

Through sharing his story, he hopes to inspire others and demonstrate that disabilities do not hinder the ability to accomplish remarkable achievements.

He said:

“My awareness of myself as a blind person makes me work five times as hard as others,” “There’s a stereotype that blind people are incapable, and I’ve made it my mission to prove that wrong. I want to show that I can be capable of so much more.”

“I think it’s totally okay to be blind,“The world has become overly sensitive, and while that has its place, I believe in calling things what they are. Don’t live in denial or hide behind euphemisms. Own your reality, and find strength in it.”

“I’m not visually impaired. I’m completely blind — I can’t see a thing. And that’s totally alright. I’ve made peace with it, even found humour in it sometimes. It’s who I am, and I embrace it.”
