Deadpool: Ryan Reynolds’ ‘End of the Road’ Goals in MCU Include X-Men, Avengers
Ryan Reynolds is opening up about Deadpool’s potential MCU future.
Reynolds has played Wade Wilson/Deadpool since 2009’s X-Men Origins: Wolverine. The character got his own movie in 2016, which was then followed by 2018’s Deadpool 2 and 2024’s Deadpool & Wolverine.
With Deadpool & Wolverine officially bringing the Merc with a Mouth into the MCU, many have been wondering what the future now holds for Wade and if he could potentially join a superhero team, be it the Avengers or X-Men.
What did Ryan Reynolds say about Deadpool joining an MCU team?
Speaking with Scott Mendelson on The Box Office podcast, Reynolds discussed how he always wants Deadpool to be a “superfan” of the MCU.
This means that joining either the X-Men or Avengers would be an “aspirational” goal for Wade Wilson. Should it ever someday happen, it would mean that Marvel is “at the end of the road” for the character.
“That is a wish fulfilment that maybe will happen,” he said.
Reflecting on how Deadpool & Wolverine played with fans’ expectations when it comes to MCU references, Reynolds said, “I liked the misdirect for audiences, thinking [Deadpool] was entering the MCU, who are we going to see? We got Jon Favreau! And then nope, nope, nobody else. We looked back instead of forward. For us, it was emotionally resonant to have a send-off, an acknowledgment of what got us to here. Warts and all, the movies that didn’t work, the movies that worked.”
There’s been no confirmation regarding when Deadpool might show up again next in the MCU or if he’ll make an appearance in Avengers: Doomsday. Reynolds is, however, exploring a potential Marvel Studios movie that may involve Deadpool and “three or four” X-Men characters, though that project is in early development and additional details remain under wraps at this time.
