Ryan Reynolds Wants To Make R-Rated Star Wars Project
Deadpool star Ryan Reynolds pitched an R-rated Star Wars project to Disney.
Reynolds is best known for playing Wade Wilson, who most recently appeared in the MCU movie Deadpool & Wolverine, which was released in 2024. That movie was directed by Shawn Levy, who is now working on his own Star Wars movie, Star Wars: Starfighter, which is scheduled to hit theaters in 2027.
What did Ryan Reynolds say about his R-rated Star Wars show pitch?
Speaking with Scott Mendelson on The Box Office podcast, Reynolds revealed that he once pitched an R-rated Star Wars project to Disney.
“It doesn’t have to be overt, A+ characters. There’s a wide range of characters you could use,” Reynolds said. “And I don’t mean R-rated to be vulgar. R-rated as a Trojan horse for emotion. I always wonder why studios don’t want to just gamble on something like that.
“…I’m not saying I want to be in it. That would be a bad fit. I’d want to produce and write, or be a part of behind the scenes. Those kinds of IP subsist really well on scarcity and surprise. We don’t get scarcity really with Star Wars because of Disney+, but you can certainly still surprise people.”
There has never been an R-rated Star Wars movie or show up until this point. There has also been no confirmation that any of the Star Wars projects that are currently in development will receive an R-rating; although, Andor’s Tony Gilroy recently stated that he believes a Star Wars horror project is in the works at Lucasfilm.
The next Star Wars movie that will be released in theaters is The Mandalorian & Grogu, which is being directed by Jon Favreau and is scheduled to arrive on May 22, 2026. Levy’s Star Wars: Starfighter, meanwhile, will star Ryan Gosling and currently has a May 28, 2027, release date.
