Superman Trailer May Have Spoiled Metamorpho’s Story Already

Fans seem to believe that the recently released Superman trailer spoils Metamorpho’s story in the movie. Superman is one of the most highly anticipated movies of this year. Its trailer, logline, and cast indicate that while the movie predominantly revolves around the eponymous character, others also receive significant attention in the story. However, according to fans, the trailer has seemingly revealed Metamorpho’s journey in Superman.

Metamorpho’s change of heart possibly revealed in Superman trailer

Rex Mason / Metamorpho, portrayed by Anthony Carrigan, appears in multiple scenes in the trailer. In one of these scenes, Metamorpho appears to be inside a state-of-the-art prison, presumably under Lex Luthor’s control. Metamorpho’s hand seems to be changing into green Kryptonite, affecting Superman, who is also there. This gives the prison guards the chance to attack the Man of Steel.

In a different scene, Clark breaks out of Luthor’s facility. As it shows that Rex is still inside, some fans think he uses his abilities to create elements that can energize Clark with Earth’s yellow sun, thus giving him back his powers.

@BobbensArtDen took to X (previously Twitter) and observed, “Metamorpho is in the cell with Superman and creating sunlight so he can regain his powers, the ‘doubles’ are his reflections in the glass.”

@SuperManDavCor seems to hold similar views about Metamorpho, and his dynamic with both Clark and Luthor in the movie. “My theory is that Metamorpho is being blackmailed by Lex with his girlfriend, whom he is holding captive (Lady in Pink), but at one point he helps Superman, produces sunlight and gives Kal-El a new power,” they shared.

It’s probably safe to assume that whatever Metamorpho’s initial circumstances are in the movie, he will eventually join Clark and the other heroes.

During a January 2024 interview with Rolling Stone, Carrigan stated that it was “very refreshing to be playing a superhero” after he essayed the role of the villain Victor Zsasz in the Fox series Gotham.

Superman premieres in U.S. theaters on July 11, 2025.
