Wiseguy Movie in Development, Jonathan Banks’ Status Confirmed

More than three decades since concluding its four-season run, a Wiseguy movie is now reportedly in the works from producers Sophie Cassidy and Jeff Katz, who are the team behind the Russell Crowe-led horror movie The Pope’s Exorcist. The project will be based on CBS’s acclaimed mystery crime drama show, which lasted for four seasons from 1987 to 1990.

The original series was led by Ken Wahl as Vinnie Terranova, who was introduced as a federal agent for the Organized Crime Bureau. His character “goes undercover as a mob enforcer to bring down an Italian crime syndicate, among other dangerous criminals and colorful underworlds.” For his leading performance, Wahl won a Golden Globe Award in 1990 for Best Actor.

Will Jonathan Banks return in the Wiseguy movie?

At the moment, Wahl isn’t currently attached to the movie adaptation. However, his co-star Jonathan Banks is reportedly returning to reprise his role as Frank McPike, who was first introduced in the show as an FBI senior agent. Banks was also praised for his performance and was nominated for an Emmy Award in 1989 for Outstanding Supporting Actor. After Wiseguy, he went on to gain global recognition for his iconic role in the popular Breaking Bad series.

The Wiseguy movie is expected to take place in the same universe as the original series. The story is set to follow “a new protagonist in his late 20s to early 30s,” who is being described as a blue-collar James Bond. The project will be produced by Cassidy and Matt Crespy for 2.0 Entertainment, Katz for Worldwide Katz, along with Tawnia McKiernan for Stephen J. Cannell Productions.
