Grey’s Anatomy Season 21 finale ended with yet another cliffhanger, making fans wonder what Season 22 will reveal about the fate of their favorite characters. One of the prominent among them is Chris Carmack’s Dr. Atticus “Link” Lincoln, originally introduced in the 15th season of the series. In a new interview, showrunner Meg Marinis spoke about whether Link has died in the episode.

Meg Marinis discussed Link’s fate in a recent interview with Deadline. In the Season 21 finale of Grey’s Anatomy, Link learns from his wife Jo (Camilla Luddington) that the twins they are having are girls. Just when Link is about to use a saw-like instrument on a patient’s leg, the Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital is rocked by a massive explosion, leaving his and various other characters’ fate uncertain.

When asked whether they would leave Link’s two unborn children fatherless, Marinis indicated that Link might survive. “Well, that story is such a great story in the finale because you think, they get married and then they have this lovely blissful storyline where they’re completely oblivious to what’s going on,” she said.

“And so that was all very intentional to just sucker punch the fans, because that’s what we do so well here. But no, nobody wants those two unborn girls to be fatherless.” Marinis added that to find out what exactly happened, “everyone’s just going to have to tune in to see if Link was in the part of the hospital that went kaboom.”

In the same interview, Marinis clarified that only two current and main characters in the show can truly be considered safe at this point. They are Ellen Pompeo’s Meredith Grey and Jason George’s Ben. She mentioned that Jo was also likely out of the hospital, but “if they weren’t outside the hospital, they’re there. Everybody is up for grabs.”

Grey’s Anatomy premiered on ABC on March 27, 2005. In April 2025, ABC renewed the show for the 22nd season.
