Superman Trailer: James Gunn on if Lex Luthor Is President of the US

James Gunn has addressed a popular fan theory sparked by the new Superman trailer. Viewers speculated that Lex Luthor might already be the President of the United States in the upcoming DCU film. The theory gained momentum after a specific trailer edit linked a mention of the President directly to Luthor. Gunn has now clarified the character’s role and explained why that assumption is incorrect.

James Gunn says Lex Luthor is not the President of US in Superman trailer

Following the release of the official Superman trailer, speculation emerged suggesting that Lex Luthor was serving as the President of the United States in the DCU. This theory stemmed from a scene where Lois Lane asks Superman, “Did you consult with the President?” The trailer immediately cuts to a shot of Lex Luthor, played by Nicholas Hoult, prompting viewers to believe he holds the presidential office.

In response, director James Gunn addressed the theory on Threads. When a user commented, “President Luthor?” Gunn replied, “There are no origins but Lex is not President.” This confirmation directly refutes claims that the trailer implies Lex currently occupies the Oval Office in the DCU.

Gunn also clarified other elements in the thread. Responding to a question about whether Rick Flag Sr. is the Secretary of Defense, Gunn wrote, “He’s the head of ARGUS. But he works beside the Secretary of Defense General Mori.” His clarification aimed to resolve additional confusion caused by the trailer’s editing.

Lex Luthor’s comic book history fueled the theory that he serves as President in the DCU. In DC Comics, he becomes the U.S. President, and animated adaptations like Justice League: Unlimited have teased the same storyline. However, James Gunn confirmed that his version of the DCU introduces Lex in a different role.

The trailer signals a change in storytelling. Gunn confirmed that Superman will not serve as an origin story, stating, “There are no origins.” His comment makes clear that the film features already-established characters. Still, Gunn emphasized that the narrative includes essential character development.

Superman will premiere in U.S. theaters on July 11, 2025.
