Andor Showrunner on Why Cassian’s Sister Isn’t in Season 2
With Andor coming to a dramatic end with its final three episodes, showrunner Tony Gilroy has come out to explain the absence of several pivotal characters in Season 2, including Cassian’s sister and Andy Serkis’ Kino Loy. With Andor’s sequel season closing the book on the origin story for Diego Luna’s character, fans are even more concerned about the fate of Loy and Cassian’s sibling. However, Gilroy has now provided an explanation for the absence of the characters.
Tony Gilroy on why Cassian never found his sister in Andor Season 2
In a recent discussion, Tony Gilroy explained that he did not include Cassian’s sister in Andor Season 2 as he wanted Luna’s character to have a void in his heart, which ultimately motivated the Rebel spy to continue his journey on the good path.
While speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, Gilroy noted, “People wanted to know if we’re going to resolve the sister. And the sister, in the beginning, is so much more interesting to me as a deficit. She’s much more valuable to me for Cassian as an absence.” He further clarified, “As he says in the end, ‘Maybe I should stop saving people.’ His need to return and save people and to be a savior and the compulsion to do that comes from this hole in his life, and I didn’t really didn’t want to fill that in.”
The series began with Cassian Andor desperately attempting to locate his lost sister on Morlana One. The quest inadvertently forced the thief-turned-rebel spy to terminate two Imperial Security Bureau officers, which ultimately resulted in Cassian joining the Rebellion. While his sister did feature in Andor’s debut season through a series of flashbacks, she was notably absent from Season 2 of the show.
With its second season, Andor has come to an end as its conclusive moments lead directly into the events of 2016’s Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.
