Fantastic Four: Julia Garner’s Silver Surfer Takes Human Form in Set Photos

Julia Garner, who will portray Shalla-Bal / Silver Surfer in the upcoming superhero feature The Fantastic Four: First Steps, was recently photographed on the set of the movie in human form. Notably, First Steps does not take place in the same fictional universe as most of the other MCU projects. Instead, its setting is a 1960s-inspired retro-futuristic Earth. A different version of Silver Surfer, whose original name is Norrin Radd, is shown in the 2007 movie Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer. There, Doug Jones plays the character, and Laurence Fishburne voices him.

Garner was present on the set of The Fantastic Four: First Steps on Wednesday, May 7, in Los Angeles, California, for additional photography. She had a white and blue-patterned dress on and was standing on jagged rocks by the ocean. The expression on Garner’s face seems to indicate that it’s a dramatic scene.

One of the photos shows Garner facing the ocean, with her arms on either side. In a January 2025 interview with Who What Wear, Garner reflected on the mystery around her character. She also spoke about how the filmmakers used motion capture to film the Silver Surfer scenes. “You have to imagine everything when you’re doing it, as if you’re auditioning,” she explained. “Even though we had the sets, I didn’t have my costume or hair and makeup or anything,” Garner further stated.

Besides Garner, the cast of The Fantastic Four: First Steps includes Pedro Pascal as Reed Richards / Mister Fantastic, Vanessa Kirby as Sue Storm / Invisible Woman, Joseph Quinn as Johnny Storm / Human Torch, Ebon Moss-Bachrach as Ben Grimm / The Thing, and Ralph Ineson as Galactus.

Shalla-Bal, created by Stan Lee and artist John Buscema, has appeared in Marvel Comics since the late ’60s. An alternate version of the character became the Silver Surfer in the Earth X comic book series.

The movie premieres in U.S. theaters on July 25, 2025.
