John Wick Caine Spin-off Adds Returning Actor to Cast of Donnie Yen Movie

The John Wick spin-off film Caine is bringing back another star from the film’s franchise.

Who has joined the John Wick Caine spin-off?

Musician and actress Rina Sawayama will be returning to the film for the Donnie Yen-led spin-off. She’ll be reprising her role as the mysterious daughter of Shimazu Koji (played by Hiroyuki Sanada), Shimazu Akira, who first appeared in John Wick: Chapter 4.

While many of the details around Caine are unknown, Yen has signed on as the movie’s director and executive producer. This marks the acclaimed Hong Kong actor’s first time directing an English-language feature. The untitled Caine spin-off will be written by Mattson Tomlin based on a previous draft by Robert Askins. It will be produced by John Wick director Chad Stahelski for 87Eleven Entertainment, along with franchise producers Basil Iwanyk and Erica Lee for Thunder Road. Production is expected to begin sometime this year.

Last month, Yen said he was both “thrilled and deeply inspired” to get working on the film. On the casting of Sawayama, John Wick mainstay Chad Stahelski praised the return of the “badass,” and said he couldn’t wait to get to work.

“Rina is such a badass,” Stahelski said in a statement. “I love what she did with this role in Chapter 4 and can’t wait to see her cross paths with Caine once again.”

“Most delighted to welcome Rina back into this new exciting journey with us,” Yen added. “It will be my pleasure and attempt to elevate her amazing character that left us mesmerized from John Wick: Chapter 4!”

In John Wick: Chapter 4, Caine is contracted by the High Table to kill John Wick, his friend, in order to protect himself and his daughter.

By the end of the film, Caine had earned his freedom and was seen in a post-credits scene going to see his daughter, before being attacked by Akira (Rina Sawayama), the daughter of Shimazu Koji (Hiroyuki Sanada), who Caine had killed earlier in the film.
