Marvel Spoils Thunderbolts* Twist in New Billboards
New billboards for Marvel’s Thunderbolts* spoil the reason why the asterisk is in the title.
Thunderbolts* opened in United States theaters this past weekend. Directed by Jake Schreier, the MCU movie stars Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova, Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes, Wyatt Russell as John Walker/U.S. Agent, Olga Kurylenko as Taskmaster, Lewis Pullman as Bob Reynolds/Sentry, Geraldine Viswanathan as Mel, David Harbour as Alexei Shostaskov/Red Guardian, Hannah John-Kamen as Ava Starr/Ghost, and Julia Louis-Dreyfus as Valentina Allegra de Fontaine.
What is the big twist of Thunderbolts*?
At the end of Marvel Studios’ Thunderbolts*, the titular team of heroes is about to apprehend Valentina Allegra de Fontaine; however, she surprises them by staging a press conference and then rebrands them as the New Avengers.
On X, Jarett Wieselman shared photos of large Thunderbolts* billboards being changed so that the movie’s title now reads The New Avengers.
While the New Avengers have been assembled, there’s mention in Thunderbolts* that Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson/Captain America is also building his own Avengers team, meaning the two will likely come head-to-head in Avengers: Doomsday. It has been confirmed that Pugh, Stan, Russell, Pullman, Harbour, John-Kamen, and Mackie, among many others will all return for that film, which will be released on May 1, 2026.
“Marvel Studios assembles an unconventional team of antiheroes—Yelena Belova, Bucky Barnes, Red Guardian, Ghost, Taskmaster, and John Walker,” the official synopsis for the movie reads. “After finding themselves ensnared in a death trap set by Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, these disillusioned castoffs must embark on a dangerous mission that will force them to confront the darkest corners of their pasts. Will this dysfunctional group tear themselves apart, or find redemption and unite as something much more before it’s too late?”
Thunderbolts* is now playing in United States theaters.
