Gregg Popovich steps down as coach of Spurs

Gregg Popovich, on Friday, stepped down as the head coach of the San Antonio Spurs.

The 76-year-old will transition to the role of president of basketball operations, the team confirmed.

Popovich suffered a stroke in November 2024 and has not coached a game since 31 October.

He said in a statement: “While my love and passion for the game remain, I’ve decided it’s time to step away as head coach.

“I’m forever grateful to the wonderful players, coaches, staff, and fans who allowed me to serve them as the Spurs head coach and am excited for the opportunity to continue to support the organisation, community, and city that are so meaningful to me.”

Popovich recorded 1,422 regular-season wins and won five NBA championships.

That places him in third position behind Phil Jackson (11) and Red Auerbach (9) on the all-time list.
