Do2dtun Criticizes Whitemoney For Tribal Comments At 17th Headies Awards

Nigerian media figure Dotun Ojuolape Kayode, widely known as Do2dtun, has publicly criticized reality TV star Whitemoney following his tribal comment during the 17th Headies Awards.

The event, held on Sunday at the Eko Convention Centre in Lagos, saw Whitemoney accepting the Afrobeats Single of the Year award on behalf of singer Flavour. However, his acceptance speech caused a stir when he stated that he was receiving the award “on behalf of the Igbos.”

This comment quickly sparked backlash, with many questioning the relevance of such remarks at a ceremony that celebrates pan-African musical achievements.

Do2dtun took to his 𝕏 (formerly Twitter) to express his disapproval, describing Whitemoney’s statement as inappropriate for the event. “‘On behalf of the Igbos.’ I’m sorry, but that was completely unnecessary. It didn’t require that kind of narrative. This is an award earned by an African artist, for Afrobeat, and a Nigerian,” he posted.

His remarks have ignited a broader conversation on social media, with people debating whether ethnic references should be made during significant national award ceremonies.

@EasYQuality, “I think people can give a speech however they like it. I see it like he’s presenting the award to the igbo tribe and besides, same with iyabo ojo daughter wedding can be identified as Yoruba wedding.”

@nikkywinky, “I said this too, it’s so unnecessary. Who sent him to collect the award for flavor self because it doesn’t look like flavor told him to do that, still went there to say unnecessary things.”
