Donald Trump Criticized For Breaking Dress Code At Pope Francis’ Funeral

During the funeral of Pope Francis in Rome, former U.S. President Donald Trump drew attention for allegedly violating the event’s strict dress code.

Trump appeared in a blue suit paired with a matching blue tie, differing from the Vatican’s official guidelines, which called for male attendees to wear a dark suit, a white shirt, a long black tie, and black accessories, including shoes, socks, coats, and umbrellas.

While many global leaders dressed in accordance with the traditional mourning attire, critics quickly noted Trump’s deviation, viewing it as a sign of disrespect to the late Pontiff. Though others, such as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and U.S. President Joe Biden, also opted for blue ties, most participants respected the all-black dress requirement.

Seated among foreign dignitaries and royalty in the front row, Trump’s choice of attire sparked ridicule. “Why is Trump the only male world leader wearing a blue suit? Has he no sense of decorum? Shame on him,” said Alison Graham, one observer at the event.

Other figures, including Prince William—who wore a dark navy suit with the appropriate black tie—and President Zelensky—who attended in a black military-style outfit—also faced mild criticism for not strictly following the formal dress expectations.

Melania Trump, marking her 55th birthday on the day of the funeral, followed the Vatican’s dress code for women with precision. She wore a black coat, paired with a lace veil and gloves, completing her look with a simple diamond-studded cross pendant. The guidelines for female attendees required modest black attire, including long dresses, gloves, and veils.
