Hugh Grant calls out his children’s school
Recently, Hugh Grant voiced his concerns with the increasing use of technology in schools, particularly at “posh private schools” attended by his children. The actor spoke during an event at Knightsbridge School in London, hosted by the campaign group Close Screens, Open Minds. The event was also attended by social psychologist Jonathan Haidt and Sophie Winkleman.
Speaking at the event, Grant criticized schools for over-relying on laptops and tablets for everyday learning. The Heretic star also voiced his disappointment with schools that prevent outdoor activities due to weather conditions, calling it “pathetic.” He said, “They’re the ones saying they’re not going to play outside today because it’s raining, or they can’t go on the climbing frame because it’s windy.” (via The Telegraph)
Grant revealed the “final straw” came when his children’s school proudly announced it would be giving every student a Chromebook. He said, “That is the last f—ing thing they need and the last thing we need.” He also pointed out that many parents feel too intimidated to challenge school policies, afraid to “rock the boat.” But he believes change is only possible if more parents speak up.
The actor believes that if enough parents express their dissatisfaction, schools and politicians will have no choice but to listen and make changes. He said, “That’s also when schools start to listen because they’re scared of people leaving their schools and losing business.”
Grant is the father of five children. He shares John, Lulu, and Blue with his wife, Anna Eberstein. He also shares two children — Tabitha and Felix — with Tinglan Hong, his ex-partner.
