CoverStar Wars: Revenge of the Sith Anniversary Box Office Outdoes New Releases

Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith is set to rerelease in theaters this week in celebration of its 20th anniversary, and early box office impressions show the movie outperforming some new releases.

What are the first Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith 20th Anniversary box office impressions?

According to recent projections (via Deadline) for this week’s box office results, Revenge of the Sith’s rerelease could act as a wildcard of sorts. The movie earned $3.4 million in previews this week, and based on presales, could bring in as much as $20+ million.

Should the movie earn that much, it could push The Accountant 2’s release down a peg, and potentially even steal the #2 slot for the week from the Ben Affleck and Jon Bernthal movie. Deadline’s report mentions that past Star Wars rereleases have mostly all had single digit box office returns, with Phantom Menace earning $8.7 million last year.

In celebration of its 20th anniversary, Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith will be heading back to theaters for one week only in U.S. theaters and select international territories, starting on April 25. In addition, during its limited run, the film will also be shown in 4DX for the first time.

“The film takes place years after the onset of the Clone Wars, when the noble Jedi Knights lead a massive clone army into a galaxy-wide battle against the Separatists,” reads the official synopsis. “When the sinister Sith unveil a thousand-year-old plot to rule the galaxy, the Republic crumbles and from its ashes rises the evil Galactic Empire. Jedi Hero Anakin Skywalker is seduced by the dark side of the Force to become the Emperor’s new apprentice – Darth Vader. The Jedi are decimated, as Obi-Wan Kenobi and Jedi Master Yoda are forced into hiding.”

Revenge of the Sith was written and directed by George Lucas. The ensemble cast included Ewan McGregor, Natalie Portman, Hayden Christensen, Ian McDiarmid, Frank Oz as Yoda, Jimmy Smits, Peter Mayhew, Ahmed Best, Oliver Ford Davies, Temuera Morrison, Anthony Daniels, Silas Carson, Kenny Baker with Samuel L. Jackson as Mace Windu and Christopher Lee as Count Dooku. Since its theatrical debut in 2005, it has received a Certified Fresh rating of 80% on Rotten Tomatoes, making it the highest-rated installment of the prequel trilogy.
