Until Dawn Reviews Blast Movie, Gets Poor Rotten Tomatoes Score

Until Dawn reviews are coming in now that the movie is out in theaters, and despite a unique twist on the game’s premise, reviews for the film are mixed.

What are Until Dawn reviews saying?

Over on Rotten Tomatoes, Until Dawn has debuted with a 59% rating with 44 critic reviews in as of now. No audience score has yet to be calculated as of yet.

Critic reviews to Until Dawn remain mostly critical of the film’s constant use of horror tropes. Inverse’s Lyvie Scott said that the film “throws plot ouf the window in favor of schlock” and gives the movie “an excuse to blitz through as many teen horror tropes as can fit in two hours.”

Polygon’s Austen Goslin is a bit harsher, saying the movie “doesn’t fail because it’s not faithful to the game. It fails because it’s boring, in a way the game never was.”

Despite the reviews being critical, not every critic came away from the movie not liking it. The Guardian’s Benjamin Lee called the movie “passable” as a lower-stakes movie, and even if the film wasn’t scary, it was “made with some skill and enlivened by a strong troupe of young actors.”

The cast of Until Dawn includes Ella Rubin, Michael Cimino, Odessa A’zion, Ji-young Yoo, Belmont Cameli, Maia Mitchell, and Peter Stormare.

The script comes from Blair Butler and Gary Dauberman. Sandberg and Dauberman produce the movie alongside Asad Qizilbash, Carter Swan, Lotta Losten, Roy Lee, and Mia Maniscalco. Charles Miller and Hermen Hulst serve as executive producers.

“One year after her sister Melanie mysteriously disappeared, Clover and her friends head into the remote valley where she vanished in search of answers. Exploring an abandoned visitor center, they find themselves stalked by a masked killer and horrifically murdered one by one…only to wake up and find themselves back at the beginning of the same evening,” the synopsis reads. “Trapped in the valley, they’re forced to relive the nightmare again and again — only each time the killer threat is different, each more terrifying than the last. Hope dwindling, the group soon realizes they have a limited number of deaths left, and the only way to escape is to survive until dawn.”

Until Dawn is out now in theaters.
