What do we know about the Urban Legend reboot?
According to THR’s report, the new version of the 1998 horror movie will be written by Shanrah Wakefield. Gary Dauberman, one of the co-writers of the upcoming Until Dawn adaptation, is producing the film via his production company Coin Operated. Neal Moritz, one of the producers of the original film, is also in talks to produce.
Currently, no casting information or any other news, including potential directors, have been mentioned. THR’s report notes that the film is aiming to be “examination of what an urban legend looks like in a post-digital world.”
The original Urban Legend was released in 1998, and directed by Jamie Blanks. The film starred a young Jared Leto, Alicia Witt, Rebecca Gayheart, Joshua Jackson, Loretta Devine, Tara Reid, Michael Rosenbaum, and Robert Englund.
Urban Legend’s plot focused on a string of murders taking place at a New England university, all of which were tired to various popular urban legends at the time. These include kills inspired by things like drinking soda with Pop Rocks, flashing your lights at cars on the road, and more.
The original film was a moderate success, and is mostly remembered for being one of the first films to help redistribute many urban legends around the world. The movie spawned off two sequels, which were released in 2000 and 2005.
