Toy Story 5 Cast Finds New Combat Carl Voice Actor

Pixar has officially enlisted a new voice actor, who will be taking over the role of Combat Carl in the upcoming Toy Story 5. The character was formerly played by Rocky vet Carl Weathers, who passed away over a year ago at the age of 76. Toy Story 5 is currently slated to arrive in theaters on June 19, 2026.

Who is the new Combat Carl voice actor?

Ghostbusters vet Ernie Hudson has been tapped to lend his voice to the character of Combat Carl, G.I. Joe-type character who previously appeared in Toy Story 4. This won’t be Hudson’s first animated role, as he previously starred in 2004’s Clifford’s Really Big Movie and 2016’s Batman: Bat Blood. He also lended his voice in shows like Superman: The Animated Series, Transformers: Prime, Robot Chicken, Infinity Train, and Star Wars: The Bad Batch.

Toy Story 5 is being directed by Andrew Stanton (Finding Nemo, Wall-E) from a screenplay he also wrote. The next installment will once again feature the voices of franchise leads Tom Hanks as Woody and Tim Allen as Buzz Lightyear. Their characters were last seen together in 2019’s Toy Story 4, where Woody decided to stay with Bo Peep instead of returning home to Bonnie.

At the moment, the studio hasn’t shared the official synopsis and full cast lineup yet, but Joan Cusack’s Jessie is expected to have a major role in the new installment. In addition, Allen also previously promised fans to expect a “really good” story for the sequel.

“It’s a very, very clever story. Do you wanna do five of these? I don’t really believe it’s about the money,” he said. “I’m sure they want it to be a success, but that’s not why they did it. Had they not come up with a brilliant script, they wouldn’t have done it and they wouldn’t have called me and Tom [Hanks]. It’s really clever. It was really a struggle to get, and then maybe two hours in, I was doing Buzz. I’m so blessed to be Buzz Lightyear, to be honest. It’s gonna be fun. I think we’re a year out. I’ve gotten up to the third act. We’ll do the third act. And then, we’ll go back and clean it. And then, I’ll do it about five more times. It’s a really good story, guys. It’s really good.”
