Game of Thrones Writer George R.R. Martin Gives Update on Next Book

George R.R. Martin has given an update on his much-awaited next book, The Winds of Winter, in a recent interview. It is the sixth book in the Game of Thrones series, which was announced after the completion of A Dance with Dragons. However, despite the acclaimed author asserting that he would finish the upcoming book soon, readers and GOT fans have been waiting for over a decade for the novel to come.

The A Song of Ice and Fire author recently sat down for a conversation, where he addressed the status of his novel, The Winds of Winter.

The interviewer from TIME brought up the recent meme about George R.R. Martin and the direwolves that instantly became viral on the internet. The meme in question was that the ancient direwolves, which featured heavily in the Game of Thrones series, were back, but Martin’s book was not out yet.

On this, the author said that the book was “the curse of my life.” He conveyed, “There’s no doubt Winds of Winter is 13 years late. I’m still working on it. I have periods where I make progress, and then other things divert my attention, and suddenly I have a deadline for one of the HBO shows, I have something else to do.”

Martin also responded to fans who assume that his other ventures, like his bookstore, his theater, and his participation in the recent de-extinction of the direwolves, hindered the progress on the book. The author is also an investor in the company Colossal Biosciences, which brought back the direwolves.

George R.R. Martin further stated that the direwolves project ”did not seriously infringe on the writing of Winds of Winter, but people make it seem like it’s one or the other. And it’s not.”
