“80% of Nigerians use okirika“ – Actor Sylvester Madu replies trolls

Veteran Nollywood actor Sylvester Madu has addressed the backlash surrounding his involvement with okirika (secondhand) clothing, following a viral video that sparked widespread speculation.

In the video, which surfaced in 2023, Sylvester Madu was seen arranging clothes at a local market in Enugu, leading some to question his financial situation. However, in a recent online post, the actor clarified his stance on the matter.

Madu refuted claims of his direct involvement in the okirika business, emphasizing that he was not selling secondhand clothes. He pointed out that many essential items used in daily life, including cars and televisions, are secondhand products, and questioned why people only seem to focus on clothing.

“They keep talking about okirika as if it’s one thing that originates from the gutter. 80% of Nigerians use okirika. The cars we drive are okirika. Some of the TVs in your house are okirika. Or you think it’s only clothes that are okirika?”, He asked.

“I’ve made it clear that I’m not selling okirika and it’s not a bad business. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not condemning it, unlike what you guys heard in the interview”, He stated.
