Comedian Alibaba Recounts Near-Arrest by DSS After Making Abacha Laugh

Veteran Nigerian comedian, Alibaba Akpobome, recently shared a memorable and nerve-wracking moment from early in his career involving the late former Head of State, General Sani Abacha.

Speaking during a public appearance, Alibaba recounted performing at a state event organized in honor of Abacha, which featured a cultural dance presentation. While the performance was ongoing, Alibaba noticed that the president was still wearing his signature dark glasses, despite it getting visibly darker outside.

In a bold move, the comedian asked the dancers to pause and addressed the head of state directly. He humorously questioned how Abacha could enjoy the performance while wearing dark shades in low light.

Surprisingly, Abacha responded by removing the glasses and setting them aside, seemingly amused by the comment.

However, the light-hearted moment quickly turned tense. Alibaba noticed that DSS operatives had begun making their way to the backstage area, likely preparing to confront him for his boldness.

Sensing trouble, the comedian decided not to return backstage but instead went and sat directly in front of the head of state. To his relief, Abacha chuckled and made a joking comment about Alibaba’s clever decision to stay within his view, diffusing the tension.

“As soon as I made the announcement, I saw DSS boys going to the backstage. When I saw this I went to where Abacha was and sat down on the ground in front of him,” he said in part.
