Kevin Bacon Wanted to Star in Spinal Tap 2 but ‘Didn’t Get the Part’

Kevin Bacon says that he wanted to star in This Is Spinal Tap 2, also known as Spinal Tap II: The End Continues; however, he didn’t get the part.

Spinal Tap II: The End Continues is the forthcoming sequel to 1984’s This Is Spinal Tap. The movie is directed by Rob Reiner and will star Christopher Guest as Nigel Tufnel, Michael McKean as David St. Hubbins, Harry Shearer as Derek Smalls, and Fran Drescher as Bobbi Flekman. Reiner will also once again play Martin “Marty” Di Bergi.

Appearing on The View, via Entertainment Weekly, Bacon said that he wanted to “play one of the exploding drummers in the new Spinal Tap, basically, but I didn’t have Rob’s number.” Bacon and Reiner previously worked together on 1992’s A Few Good Men.

“Somebody called him for me, and I didn’t get the part,” Bacon continued. “Spinal Tap, I’m so excited about part two, and the original it was a running joke that they just had drummers that would disappear.”

A March 2025 article from Deadline says regarding the plot of Spinal Tap 2, “In the sequel, the fictional heavy metal group reunites after a 15-year hiatus for one final concert. Reiner returns Marty DiBergi, the documentarian who follows them on tour, with music legends like Elton John, Paul McCartney, Garth Brooks, and Trisha Yearwood all making cameos.”

Spinal Tap II: The End Continues will be released in United States theaters on September 12, 2025, by Bleecker Street.

The original This Is Spinal Tap, meanwhile, is currently available to stream on Xumo. That movie (which marked Riner’s feature film directorial debut) is perhaps best known for coining the phrase “up to eleven,” a reference to how Nigel Tufnel’s guitar amplifiers are marked from zero to eleven rather than zero to ten.
