A Minecraft Movie Thursday Night Previews Sets Box Office Record for Video Game Movies

A Minecraft Movie is off to a great start at the box office.

Warner Bros. Pictures’ A Minecraft Movie is being released in United States theaters this weekend. The movie, which is based on the popular video game by Mojang Studios, is directed by Jared Hess and stars Jason Momoa, Jack Black, and more.

Per Deadline, A Minecraft Movie brought in $10.55 million at the box office during Thursday night previews.

This sets a record for video game movies when it comes to early previews, as A Minecraft Movie surpasses Universal and Blumhouse’s Five Nights at Freddy’s Thursday night number, which came in at $10.3 million. It is important to note, however, that 2023’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie didn’t have Thursday night previews, as that movie opened on a Wednesday.

How much money is A Minecraft Movie going to make during its opening weekend?

A Minecraft Movie is now looking to make at least $80 million during its opening weekend in the United States, according to Deadline.

Variety, meanwhile, reports that the film is currently targeting somewhere between $70 million to $80 million, though a $90 million opening isn’t out of the question, either. The film reportedly has a $150 million budget “to produce and plenty more to market.”

Along with Black and Momoa, A Minecraft Movie stars Emma Myers, Danielle Brooks, Jennifer Coolidge, Sebastian Hansen, and more.

“Welcome to the world of Minecraft, where creativity doesn’t just help you craft, it’s essential to one’s survival! Four misfits—Garrett ‘The Garbage Man’ Garrison (Momoa), Henry (Hansen), Natalie (Myers), and Dawn (Brooks)—find themselves struggling with ordinary problems when they are suddenly pulled through a mysterious portal into the Overworld: a bizarre, cubic wonderland that thrives on imagination,” the synopsis for the movie reads. “To get back home, they’ll have to master this world (and protect it from evil things like Piglins and Zombies, too) while embarking on a magical quest with an unexpected, expert crafter, Steve (Black). Together, their adventure will challenge all five to be bold and to reconnect with the qualities that make each of them uniquely creative…the very skills they need to thrive back in the real world.”
