Laurence Fishburne Reveals Why He Wasn’t in The Matrix Resurrections
Academy Award nominee Laurence Fishburne has shared the reason why he didn’t appear in Warner Bros.’ The Matrix Resurrections, which served as the fourth installment to the iconic sci-fi action franchise. For the first three installments, Fishburne had played the role of Morpheus, who was one of the key people that helped Neo realized that he was living in a simulation.
Fishburne’s Morpheus was last seen by fans at the end of 2003’s The Matrix Revolutions, where he was saved alongside the people of Zion after Neo sacrificed himself. A younger version of the character, portrayed by Emmy winner Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, appeared in The Matrix Resurrections.
Why wasn’t Laurence Fishburne in The Matrix Resurrections?
During a recent interview on The View, Fishburne explained his absence from The Matrix Resurrections, confirming that he wasn’t really invited to join the project. He also shared that he actually tried to find a way to return for the action. However, due to creative difference, he didn’t get an offer to reprise his role as Morpheus.
“I offered my services to the fourth Matrix, and they didn’t respond well to that,” Fishburne said. “It’s not like I didn’t say, ‘I’d like to offer my services.’ I did.”
In addition, when asked if he would be willing to reprise his role in another potential Matrix sequel, Fishburned admitted that he isn’t really closing the door for Morpheus’ return. However, his involvement will “depend on the circumstances,” including who will the creative team behind the project. “It depends on who was involved, how well the script has been written,” he said.
The Matrix Resurrections was directed by Lana Wachowski, who also co-wrote the screenplay with David Mitchell and Aleksandar Hemon. The fourth installment featured the return of Keanu Reeves as Neo and Carrie-Anne Moss as Trinity. Unlike previous installments, Resurrections was a box office disappointment with a worldwide gross of $157 million, making it the lowest-grossing movie of the franchise.
