The White Lotus Composer Leaves Show After Fights With Creator Mike White

The White Lotus composer Cristóbal Tapia de Veer announced that he has officially left the series after a fight with creator Mike White over the show’s score.

Why is The White Lotus composer leaving the show?

In a recent interview with The New York Times, de Veer confirmed he would be exiting the show following its third season and pointed to a variety of creative differences with White as to why.

“I announced to the [editorial] team a few months ago that I was not coming back, that I was leaving,” de Veer said. “At some point, [White] heard about that.”

According to de Veer, he and White have been at odds with the show’s score since the first season. The composer claims that White never liked the first season’s score and its “ohh-loo-loo-loos,” which de Veer says White would call “crazy people and screaming.”

“I just stuck to what I was doing,” said de Veer. “And when I was giving versions, it was still the same thing: There were still crazy people and screaming and stuff like that. From there, it became this weird relationship of, ‘How do I pass all this weird music into the show?’”

The third season of The White Lotus didn’t feature the same vocals as the first two in its intro, something fans were quick to notice. According to de Veer, he doesn’t think people realized how much fans had liked them, but that White vetoed adding them back into the show during some of the later episodes.

“I don’t think everybody was really aware of how attached people were to the ooh-loo-loo-loos,” de Veer said. “People are furious about the change of the theme, and I thought that was interesting. I texted the producer and I told him that it would be great to, at some point, give [fans] the longer version with the ooh-loo-loo-loos because people will explode if they realize that it was going there anyway. He thought it was a good idea. But then Mike cut that — he wasn’t happy about that. At that point, we already had our last fight forever, I think. So he was just saying ‘no’ to anything.”
