Fan demand for Batman Forever’s Schumacher cut rises with Val Kilmer’s demise
Superhero fans are taking over social media and requesting Warner Bros. Pictures to release Joel Schumacher’s cut of Batman Forever to honor Val Kilmer.
Schumacher’s Batman Forever arrived in theaters on June 16, 1995, and was a huge success at the box office. However, it received mixed reviews from critics. According to Collider, at SDCC 2024, screenwriter Akiva Goldsman, who also worked on the movie, disclosed that Schumacher’s cut “does exist.”
Goldsman further shared details about the version and said, “It was darker. Bruce was haunted by his past. He felt guilt. It’s all the stuff you read. None of that is mysterious. It was a more modern interpretation of the narrative, and what’s not dissimilar to those [stories] that we sort of caught up with now.” Akiva Goldsman also conveyed that he did talk to Warner Bros about its release after Schumacher passed away in 2020.
Now, fans on the internet are teaming up and trending #ReleaseTheSchumacherCut on X (formerly Twitter). A user wrote, “I hope Warner Bros finally gets around to #ReleaseTheSchumacherCut for not just the 30th anniversary of Batman Forever but also to honor both Val Kilmer and Joel Schumacher.”
Another user mentioned WB and wrote, “One way to honor Val Kilmer’s amazing legacy would be to #ReleasetheSchumacherCut of Batman Forever.”
Moreover, one fan asked WB to release Schumacher’s cut to honor Kilmer’s legacy. They wrote, “It would have been noble to do it while he was still here to see it, but it’s not too late to do it out of respect for him, his legacy, and his contribution to the #Batman mystique. Now is the time to #ReleaseTheSchumacherCut.”
Furthermore, a user replied to Goldsman’s tweet about Kilmer and stated, “He was the first live-action Batman I saw as a child, and now I can’t believe he’s gone. I hope the original version of Batman Forever will be released to see more of Val Kilmer’s performance.”
