John Wick 5 Update: Keanu Reeves Returns, Director Set for Sequel
Despite the ambiguous ending of John Wick: Chapter 4, the titular assassin is officially returning for another movie as Lionsgate has announced that John Wick: Chapter 5 is moving forward.
What is the latest John Wick 5 update?
During Lionsgate’s presentation at the ongoing CinemaCon this week, the company confirmed that a fifth entry in the John Wick franchise was officially in the works. Not only that, but star Keanu Reeves and director Chad Stahelski will both return to the franchise for the next installment.
Although the company hinted that a film was already happening last year, this confirms that the main driving forces of the series will be back. It’s unclear just how the film will tackle the end of the fourth film, which seemed to hint that Wick had died after a duel with Caine (Donnie Yen).
“Keanu, Chad, Basil and Erica would not return unless they had something truly phenomenal and fresh to say with these characters and this world,” said Lionsgate Motion Picture Group chair Adam Fogelson at CinemaCon (via THR). “We can’t wait for audiences to see where the journey takes us next.”
The most recent John Wick movie, John Wick: Chapter 4, released in 2023, and was a smash hit, earning more than $440 million at the global box office. The film was directed by Stahelski from a screenplay co-written by Shay Hatten and Michael Finch, who took over from franchise creator Derek Kolstad. The fourth installment starred Keanu Reeves, Lance Reddick, Ian McShane, Rina Sawayama, Shamier Anderson, Bill Skarsgard, Clancy Brown, Hiroyuki Sanada, and Donnie Yen.
A spin-off film, Ballerina, is also set to premiere this year on June 6, 2025, and will star Ana de Armas as a ballerina who begins training to become an assassin. Ballerina will also feature appearances by Anjelica Huston, the late Lance Reddick, Ian McShane, and Keanu Reeves himself.
