Spider-Man: Brand New Day Title Teases Villain & Story Details

The MCU’s Spider-Man 4, featuring Tom Holland as the titular superhero, got a new title, Spider-Man: Brand New Day, on Monday, March 31. Some fans believe that the title teases the plot, the villain, and what comic book story can serve as the movie’s source material.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day could be inspired by Dan Slott’s Marvel comics

Director Destin Daniel Cretton at this year’s CinemaCon on Monday unveiled the official new title of the movie, Spider-Man: Brand New Day. Afterward, fans speculated how this new title hinted at the storyline, villain, and source material of the upcoming movie.

The highly-anticipated feature has the same title as the comic-book storyline Brand New Day, published from January to July 2008 and encompassing issues from Amazing Spider-Man #546 to #564. Noted comic book writer Dan Slott served as an author on the storyline alongside Marc Guggenheim, Bob Gale, and Zeb Wells.

Several fans, including well-known industry insider @MyTimeToShineH, offered theories about what similarities in the titles could mean and whether Spider-Man 4 was indeed adapting the comic book storyline of the same name. The storyline One More Day preceded Brand New Day. Several elements from there were loosely adapted in 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home, the third entry in the MCU Spider-Man movie series.

Notably, this wasn’t necessarily a scoop from @MyTimeToShineH, but merely speculations.

The Brand New Day storyline follows (spoilers for the comics warning) Peter as he tries to adjust to his new life without Mary Jane Watson. He eventually resumes his activities as Spider-Man and encounters a new villain: Lily Hollister / Menace.

@MyTimeToShineH wondered whether Sadie Sink was cast as Lily in Spider-Man: Brand New Day. Sink’s casting was confirmed last month, though no information was disclosed about which character she would be portraying at the time.

Lily first appeared in The Amazing Spider-Man #545, but her first appearance as Menace came a few issues later. Tara Strong previously voiced Menace in the video game Spider-Man: Edge of Time.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day premieres in U.S. theaters on July 31, 2026.
