Carrie Coon says that a scene from The White Lotus Season 3 involving a nonbinary or trans child was cut because of Donald Trump’s re-election.

Coon plays Laurie Duffy in HBO’s The White Lotus Season 3, which is created by Mike White. The first seven episodes of the show’s latest season are now available to stream on Max, while the finale airs this Sunday, April 6, 2025.

Why was a scene about a nonbinary child removed from The White Lotus Season 3?

Speaking to Harper’s Bazaar, per Deadline, Coon said, “There was a bit more context to [Laurie’s[ home life. You originally found out that her daughter was actually nonbinary, maybe trans and going by they/them. You see Laurie struggling to explain it to her friends, struggling to use they/them pronouns, struggling with the language, which was all interesting. It was only a short scene, but for me, it did make the question [in episode 3] of whether Kate voted for Trump so much more provocative and personally offensive to Laurie, considering who her child is in the world.

“But the season was written before the election. And considering the way the Trump administration has weaponized the cultural war against transgender people even more since then, when the time came to cut the episode down, Mike felt that the scene was so small and the topic so big that it wasn’t the right way to engage in that conversation.”

Coon shares the majority of her The White Lotus scenes with Michelle Monaghan’s Jaclyn Lemon and Leslie Bibb’s Kate Bohr, as the three of them play a trio of longtime friends who are reuniting for a girls’ trip.
