Jason Momoa Tries to Unify Hawaii in Chief of War First Look
Apple TV+ has released the first look for Chief of War, the upcoming war epic that stars Jason Momoa and follows the fight for the unification of Hawai’i.
The new photo sees Momoa and several other actors standing near a fire. Momoa’s character can be seen holding a weapon in his hand while others look on to him. In the series, Momoa plays the warrior Kaʻiana, a real-life figure who is known for his battle efforts in the 1790s as various parts of Hawai’i clashed for control.

What is Chief of War about?
Chief of War follows the story of the unification and subsequent colonization of Hawai’i from the point of view of its indigenous citizens. The series features a mostly Polynesian cast and, aside from Momoa, stars Luciane Buchanan, Temuera Morrison, Te Ao o Hinepehinga, Cliff Curtis, Kaina Makua, Moses Goods, Siua Ikale’o, Brandon Finn, James Udom, Mainei Kinimaka, and Te Kohe Tuhaka.
“Set amidst the beautiful backdrop of the islands of Hawai’i, the nine-episode series based on true events, follows warrior Ka’iana, portrayed by Momoa, as he tries to unify the islands before Western colonization in the late 18th century,” reads the show’s official synopsis.
Chief of War will premiere on Apple TV+ on August 1, 2025, with the first two episodes of the show releasing. Following that, new episodes will premiere every Friday through September 19, 2025.
