Will Smith Addresses Chris Rock Oscars Slap on New Album ‘Based on a True Story’

Will Smith has addressed his infamous Oscars slap and the fallout from it on his newest album.

What did Will Smith say about his Oscars slap?

The latest album from Smith, titled “Based on a True Story,” released today. The album’s opening song, “Int. Barbershop – Day,” opens with longtime Smith collaborator DJ Jazzy Jeff and B. Simone yelling that “Will Smith is canceled.”

The song then transitions into a back-and-forth argument of sorts, with Smith and the other artists all fake arguing about Smith’s fame and his status as a celebrity over the beat.

Shortly after the start, the song references Smith’s infamous moment where he slapped Chris Rock at the 94th Academy Awards, with the argument theorizing about how Smith had to give back his Oscar (which he did not have to do).

“I heard he down bad / I heard he won the Oscar but had to give it back / And you know they only made him do that s— because he’s Black,” goes the song.

The song also refers to Smith’s wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, saying that people wish they had someone like that by their side and jokingly calling back to what Smith told Rock after he slapped the comedian at the Oscars. “You wish you had a Jada Pinkett next to you / Him and Jada both crazy – girl, what you talking ’bout / You better keep his wife’s name out of your mouth.”

Smith also refers to the incident in the song “You Lookin’ for Me?” where he talks about having to come back from that moment. “Took a lot I’m back on top / Y’all gon’ have to get acclimated / Won’t stop my s— still hot / Even though I won’t get nominated.”

Smith’s album is available to purchase or stream now.
