Girls Trip 2 Update: Producer Teases New Characters for Comedy Sequel
Producer Will Packer has finally shared a new Girls Trip 2 update after more than two years since the project was officially confirmed. At the moment, it has no target production start date or release date.
Director Malcolm D. Lee and writer Tracy Oliver are still expected to return for the sequel. Lead stars Regina Hall, Queen Latifah, Jada Pinkett Smith, and Tiffany Haddish are also reprising their respective roles as Ryan, Sasha, Lisa, and Dina. During its theatrical run in 2017, the first installment garnered critical acclaim and commercial success with a gross of over $140 million at the worldwide box office.
What was producer Will Packer’s Girls Trip 2 update?
During a recent interview on Andy Cohen’s Watch What Happens Live, Packer confirmed that Girls Trip 2 is still currently in development, revealing that he already has a script. In addition, he also teased their plans to recruit new female characters who will be joining the original main cast. He also stressed that he was “very closely” watching The Real Housewives of Atlanta Season 16 since he’s “always looking for new talent.”
“We actually are looking at doing an exotic locale — I can’t reveal it right now, but I do have a script for the first time,” Packer said (via Deadline). “Girls Trip is happening. Girls Trip 2. Bringing back all the ladies. And we’re going to add maybe some new ladies.”
The original movie centered around four best friends from college who travel to New Orleans for the annual Essence Festival in an attempt to rekindle their friendship. The film also starred Larenz Tate, Kate Walsh, Mike Colter, Mike Epps, Deborah Ayorinde, Lara Grice, and Kofi Siriboe. It was produced by Universal Pictures and Will Packer, with James Lopez and Preston Holmes serving as executive producers.
