Toy Story 5 Update: Pixar Boss Teases Unexpected Surprises
Pixar chief creative officer Pete Docter has finally revealed a Toy Story 5 update, teasing what to expect from the newest entry to the acclaimed animated comedy franchise. Prior to becoming a Pixar executive, Docter is best known for directing award-winning movies such as Monsters Inc., Up, Inside Out, and Soul.
Toy Story 5 is being directed by Andrew Stanton (Finding Nemo, Wall-E) from a screenplay he also wrote. The next installment will once again feature the voices of franchise leads Tom Hanks as Woody and Tim Allen as Buzz Lightyear. Their characters were last seen together in 2019’s Toy Story 4, where Woody decided to stay with Bo Peep instead of returning home to Bonnie. The official synopsis hasn’t been revealed yet, but Allen previously teased that Joan Cusack’s Jessie might have a key role in the new sequel.
What was Pete Docter’s Toy Story 5 update?
During a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Docter praised Stanton’s work on Toy Story 5 while assuring fans that the next installment will definitely surprise people.
“I will say Toy Story 5, I think [writer and director] Andrew’s done a really great job of letting moments breathe in unexpected ways,” Docter said. “Things that [make you think], Wait, is this a Toy Story movie?, with some of his choices, which I think we need at this point. We’ve had four of ’em already. We got to keep people surprised, so it’s going to be fun.
“That was important to us at the time when Toy Story came out, there wasn’t a lot of films that did that. There were a lot of ’em that were like four kids and nothing really other than maybe from Japan or something for adults. And so our goal was to, in the same way [Steven] Spielberg did with Indiana Jones and Star Wars with George Lucas, we’d love to bring animation into something that we as 20-, 30-year olds can enjoy.”
