Amid a packed summer lineup, Amazon MGM Studios has set the release date for a highly anticipated project. Verity, directed by Michael Showalter and based on Colleen Hoover’s bestselling novel, has a release date set for May 2026. As competition intensifies, the studio positions the film as strategic counterprogramming to major franchise releases.

Josh Hartnett and Anne Hathaway-led Verity gets May 2026 release date

Amazon MGM Studios will release Verity, a film adaptation of Colleen Hoover’s psychological thriller novel, in theaters on May 15, 2026. Michael Showalter directs the film, which stars Anne Hathaway, Dakota Johnson, Josh Hartnett, Ismael Cruz Cordóva, and Brady Wagner.

The official logline states: “Struggling writer Lowen Ashleigh is hired as a ghostwriter for renowned author Verity Crawford under mysterious circumstances, but her assignment takes a dark turn after discovering chilling autobiographical notes. Faced with a series of deadly family secrets, Lowen struggles to separate fiction from reality, while also blurring the lines with Verity’s husband, Jeremy.”

Nick Antosca wrote the current version of the screenplay. Colleen Hoover and Lauren Levine, Hillary Seitz, Angela LaManna, and the team of Will Honley and April Maguire wrote the previous drafts. Antosca also produces the film alongside Alex Hedlund, Stacey Sher, Michael Showalter, Jordana Mollick, Anne Hathaway, and Colleen Hoover.

Dakota Johnson, Lauren Levine, and Kerry Orent serve as executive producers. Eat the Cat, Semi-Formal Productions, Shiny Penny, Somewhere Pictures, and Heartbones Entertainment produce the film.

Sources told Variety that the May 15 release was selected to offer counterprogramming to other major releases that month, including Avengers: Doomsday and The Mandalorian & Grogu. According to Deadline, Universal and NEON also have untitled films scheduled for the same date.

The adaptation continues the recent trend of studios bringing Colleen Hoover’s novels to the screen. Earlier this month, photographers reportedly captured Dakota Johnson covered in blood while filming Verity on set. Hoover’s other adaptation, It Ends With Us, currently faces legal issues involving director Justin Baldoni and actress Blake Lively.
